Day TwentyTwo. Week Four.
Tuesday
For me, today’s UESTC lesson was the most entertaining and joyful class at the very moment. Today we learnt about Chinese calligraphy. It was a long time since I had done calligraphy because I had once done bamboo calligraphy drawing back in primary school. Now when I got to hold the brush again it feels so nostalgia to me. I’ve got to write two Chinese characters by practicing the right way to do it. It was really hard and demanding as every stroke and focus point is vital. It was also not easy to do a beautiful Chinese calligraphy since to be a really good at it; you must at least have 30 years of practice to master the art of calligraphy. Also, from the calligraphy that we wrote, it was said that we can know the emotions and character of the one who wrote it. But no matter what, it is all about gaining new experience and having fun while learning a new Chinese culture.

Right before the end of the UESTC class, we were given a chance to ask the teacher, who was in-charge of teaching us calligraphy, to write our names in Chinese; calligraphy style. I like to see the way the teacher moves around the brush while gracefully stroking the brush to form a word. I’ve gotten the teacher to write my name into Chinese characters and written on a special calligraphy paper. My name is ‘Sharinah’ but in the calligraphy that he wrote for me, my name had been changed into ‘Xia Ling Na’ which direct translate means ‘Summer Jade’ in Chinese. I really love the meaning of my Chinese name and feel honored to be given such a name. I would really treasure my very first calligraphy that was written by a calligraphy expert.
