Day Five. Week One.
Saturday

Today was the first time that we are going to the city at Chengdu. To be honest, I was really excited about this trip since I had one thing on my mind; SHOPPING!! But then, on during the journey to the city, I was a little cranky as I only had about 2-3 hours of sleep. One reason why was because I stayed up all night with some of the girls, playing games and chatting with one another. For us to reach the city, we had to assemble at the West Gate of the campus and took a shuttle bus to the old University campus which is about an hour trip. I managed to get a short nap while on the way there. When already reached the old campus, we had to walk about half an hour to the bus station to board a bus to the city. While walking, we passed through this ‘wet market’ which reminds me like the ‘wet market’ back in Singapore.

Once we boarded the bus to the city, it reminds me like the peak period when taking the bus in Singapore. All of us were squeezed packed like sardines in the bus. But one thing different about China and Singapore is that the people here can literally push! Not only that, honking is like a norm here in China as compared to Singapore. As we reach the city, it seems like downtown Malaysia to me. The streets are laid with a couple of street beggars and a few unauthorized handphone sellers trying to sell handphones at cheap prices. Each one of them would approach you and ask you to buy a product from them no matter how many times you tried to decline.

A group of us got separated from our teachers and depend on ourselves to wonder around the town. We the girls went around with the guys as safety precautions while shopping. I realize that the shopping district here is so much similar to ‘Bugis Street’ in Singapore. There are also some familiar shops with popular brands being established. But comparing the cost here with those in Singapore, it is actually pretty much the same. While crossing the roads here in China, I realize that the drivers don’t really care if you were crossing at the zebra crossings. We would usually be honked by them as they drive passed through and we need to somehow find our way across the streets.

Since we were behind time for the last shuttle bus back to the new campus, we decided to take the taxi back to campus. As we were in a large group, we divided ourselves into 4 taxis with the guys and girls being mixed. As my taxi was using a GPS we went through the village route and reach the campus in approximately 30 minutes. After that, we went into one of the girls’ room to play games until 5am the next morning but I ended up being the first one to fall asleep while they played games as I ate panadol due to the slight headache I was hiving.
